Former Boston Celtic and high school basketball legend from Fall River, Massachusetts Chris Herren will speak on “Standing up to Substance Abuse” in Bergen County next week.

The speaking engagement for parents and the general public on Wednesday, March 19 at 7 p.m. at Don Bosco Prep, Immaculata Hall Gymnasium, 492 N. Franklin Turnpike in Ramsey. This event is free of charge.

Chris Herren scored over 2,000 career points while at Durfee High School, was named to the 1994 McDonald's All-American team, played Division 1 college basketball and made it all the way to the NBA playing for the Denver Nuggets and Boston Celtics.

He struggled with substance abuse for much of his basketball career.

Alcohol and drug-free since August 1, 2008, he now centers his life upon sobriety and family.  He has authored a book entitled Basketball Junkie: A Memoir with Providence Journal columnist Bill Reynolds, and in 2011, ESPN aired Emmy-nominated Unguarded the story of Herren’s basketball career and drug abuse.

Chris Herren will share his story of abuse and recovery with the public in the hopes of making a difference and saving lives.

Unguarded was a phenomenal documentary by ESPN. This guy's story is unreal. Should make for a great event with an excellent message.

I have some questions. Is it the right approach to look at people 'wanting to get high' as some terrible thing? I mean, in human history, every nation has some national thing or plant that they use for intoxication, like booze. In some places, it's peyote, or nutmeg, or various plants. Are we giving over the right message by saying, don't get high don't even think about it, look at what can happen? will that alone, diffuse the human desire, or need for an elixir, a short occassional, 'trip' off of the boring daily routine?
