Dumont Offense Overpowers Lady Bridgemen

Fort Lee fell to the Huskies by six goals on Tuesday afternoon.

The Fort Lee Lady Bridgemen soccer team fell to 2-2 on Tuesday afternoon after a 7-1 loss at Dumont High School.

Dumont senior Lindsey Sansone stole the show, scoring four goals for the Huskies as the Fort Lee defense struggled for most of the game. Sansone’s goals ranged from long kicks to swift moves toward the goal.

Dumont senior Victoria Smith and junior Katelyn Arbadji also scored goals after rushing after loose balls. Natalie Mateus was the only member of the Fort Lee squad to score after she connected on a long kick from a just past midfield to make the score 6-1. Dumont got their seventh and final goal when senior Carly Reitando headed the ball in to make the final score 7-1 and give the talented Huskies team a record of 3-1.

Dumont is a very tough team, and their defense was overwhelming as Fort Lee had trouble getting shots off and getting near the goal, especially in the first half. Fort Lee got off to a rough start, which may have been a big part of the problem.

“They got a couple of goals ahead; we got our heads down and we didn’t play our game,” said head coach Phil Zappel. "We had flashes of our game, but it wasn’t consistent enough or steady enough to stay with a team as good as Dumont for the full 80 minutes.”

Fort Lee junior goalkeeper Jackie Ross had 11 saves for the Lady Bridgemen, but nothing seemed to break the fast pace of Dumont.

Coach Zappel knows that Fort Lee will not keep their heads down for long as they prepare to host defending league champs Westwood on Thursday afternoon at 4:15 p.m.

“We’re going to have to talk about a lot at practice tomorrow, keep our heads up and just improve from one day to the next," Zappel said.
