Defense Spurs Fort Lee 8th-Graders to Girls Basketball Title

Travel squad came from behind to beat Dumont for the 2014 BTBL Navy Division championship.

The Fort Lee 8th Grade Travel Team captured the 2014 BTBL Navy Division championship on Thursday with a 38-36 come-from-behind victory over Dumont.

Fort Lee fell behind 12-4 at the end of the first quarter and was down 20-9 at halftime. Fort Lee recovered in the third, forcing turnovers that led to eight quick points and narrowed the deficit to 27-23 heading into the fourth.

"These girls showed a lot heart in the second half to come back from a 20-9 halftime deficit, it shows the character this team has," coach Ralph Dimeglio said.

Fort Lee's defense caused more turnovers and resulted in fast-break baskets to take the lead for good in the fourth before surviving the frantic final moments.

"I hope these girls continue their success for the next four years at Fort Lee High School and win a Big North Conference championship and get to hang a championship banner in the newly renovated gym," said Mike Klein,
league president.
