Athlete of the Week: Soccer Standout Nikola Gogic

The senior has been very goal-oriented this season.

Nikola Gogic, a senior, is proud to be center midfielder and forward for the 5-1-1 Bridgemen soccer team.

That pride, along with the team, has reached new heights as the Bridgemen are currently in the midst of a five-game winning streak. And while that success has been a true team effort, Gogic has played a big part in it all with his many goals and assists.

Last Monday, Gogic assisted on the tying goal in a 3-2 come-from-behind win on the road against the Westwood Cardinals. Gogic also scored the game-winning goal in the game to keep the team’s streak alive. His success continued on Saturday when the Bridgemen defeated Dwight Englewood. That game saw Gogic score two goals in a 6-0 shutout victory.

Despite the season being in its early stages, Gogic and the rest of the team are pleased with what they have accomplished so far.

"This is still a young season, and we played a few games, and with every game we are getting better as a team and individually," Gogic said. "We have been working hard and getting to each other better, and as a result, we have been playing good soccer."

Being a leader is a very important role for any athlete, and Gogic has taken the role in stride.

"I try to push my team to play hard, and I try to motivate them so that they are good enough to beat the best, and I give it my all," he said.

The team's goals for the season are nothing less than to become league champs, make the county tournament and make a long run in the state tournament. Gogic’s personal goal is to make first team All-State.

Things are looking up for the Bridgemen soccer team, and confidence is running high. The team knows there is a lot of soccer left to play, but it has certainly been a good start. And Gogic is excited about it.

"Winning these last five games has made us very optimistic," he said. "We believe that this is our season to shine."
