Spring Sports Season Underway For Bridgemen, Lady Bridgmen Teams

The Fort Lee High School varsity sports teams are off to promising starts to the season.

The Bridgemen and Lady Bridgemen spring sports season is underway, and all five teams were very busy last week.

The Bridgemen varsity baseball team went 1-2, losing to Cliffside Park, 7-4; losing to Ridgefield Park, 17-2; but earning an impressive 14-4 win over Manchester Regional. The Bridgemen will look to bounce back this week when they host McNair Academy on Saturday, April 14, at 10 a.m.

The Lady Bridgemen softball team went 2-2 their first week, including some "character wins."

The team lost the season opener to Bergenfield by a score of 7-2 but bounced back against Cliffside Park. The team was down 8-2 in that contest but came back for a 10-9 win.

That game was followed by another comeback win against Ridgefield Park. The Lady Bridgemen were down 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning and won in the bottom of the 7th by a score of 7-6. The team ended the week with a 5-3 loss against Ridgefield, but there is certainly promise and expectations for the Fort Lee Softball team.

This week, they will visit Dumont Monday at 4:15 p.m., host Westwood on Wednesday at 4 p.m., host Manchester Thursday at 4:15 p.m., and then close out the week on Saturday, when they host Northern Valley Demarest at 11 a.m.

The Fort Lee golf team opened the season with a loss against Mahwah and Wayne Hills but quickly recovered with a 200-230 win against Palisades Park. Freshmen Harry Jin shot a 3-over par 38. Two other freshmen played well, Sung Kyu Ro and Rachel Wi, who both shot 50. The team will visit Dwight Morrow Monday at 3:30 p.m. and visit Dumont Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

The Bridgemen tennis team is 3-0. Bergenfield, Cliffside Park and Ridgefield Park all were swept 5-0 by a strong Bridgemen team. The team was dominant all week and will look to continue the success this week when they host Fair Lawn Tuesday at 10 a.m. and visit Westwood Wednesday at 4 p.m.

The Fort Lee track team got off to a good start when they won 18 medals at the Season Opener Invitational. The team then defeated Dumont 95-54 in its first meet. Every Fort Lee athlete that competed in the meet finished first in their respective events, which is quite impressive. The team will look to keep the momentum going this week with a meet against Cliffside Park on Tuesday and the Avatar Relays on Friday.

It was an exciting start to the spring season for all of the varsity teams, and it promises to get even better.

Athlete(s) of the Week

Tennis - Andrew Lee, Yuki Takahashi and Masayoshi Miura

The three Bridgemen tennis players went the whole week without losing a set for Fort Lee. They helped lead the team to 5-0 victories against three different opponents to keep the team undefeated early in the season. Lee and Takahashi are former doubles standouts, who are now trying their hand at singles, and so far, the switch has worked out. The three athletes, along with their teammates, who also had a spectacular first week will look to continue making noise as the season progresses.
