'The Cat in the Hat' Visits Fort Lee School 1

Mayor Mark Sokolich reads to the students as Fort Lee School 1 celebrates Read Across America.

In celebration of Read Across America, Fort Lee's School 1 received a visit by two very special guests--Mayor Mark Sokolich and a very smart cat that knows a lot about inspiring the love of
reading--The Cat in the Hat.

The event, coordinated by Mrs. Green, included all Pre-K, Kindergarten, first and second grade students. Green talked about
the difference between fiction and nonfiction books and emphasized the
importance of reading daily.

“You can read under a table, on the floor, on your bed, or on a couch. It doesn’t matter where, as long as you know how,” she explained.

Mayor Mark Sokolich explained his role of Mayor explained that reading early in life is one of the most important activities they must do to become successful later in life. Sokolich told the students that he credits his success with "reading books early in life."

Sokolich then sat on his cozy chair on stage and began to read, “The Cat in the Hat” by Dr. Seuss, until he reached the part in the book where the cat knocks on the door with a “BUMP” and that is when the nine-foot tall cat walked into the assembly.

Students bobbed up and down with a sea of red and white hats as they reached for a quick hand shake or a hug from the cat. There was magic in School 1 as students serenaded the Cat with the  “Dr. Seuss, We Love You” song.

The Cat in the Hat finally joined Mrs. Green, the principal Mrs. Giacomelli, and Sokolich at the front of the school’s all-purpose room to lead the
students in reciting “The Readers Oath,”  located in the book of
promises.
