State Releases Report Card Data for Fort Lee School District

See how the borough's six schools were graded

The Department of Education Tuesday released the New Jersey School Report Card for the 2009-2010 academic year, including data for Fort Lee's six public schools.

In the borough school district's narrative on the DOE website, Fort Lee Superintendent of Schools Raymond Bandlow pointed out some of the “indicators of progress we in the Fort Lee Public Schools are making toward achieving our vision as well as toward achieving the NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards with fiscal responsibility.”

Among the “outstanding accomplishments of our students and faculty,” Bandlow noted the following:

  • School Three, representative of all four elementary schools, was honored as a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. This prestigious award is granted each year to only 1/10th of 1% of the nation's public and private schools. Only nine schools in New Jersey earned this distinction in 2010.
  • Fort Lee High School graduated 100% of our students. 97% went on to pursue higher education. Our schools are represented at 3 Ivy League Schools and many of the nation's most prestigious colleges.
  • More than $6 million in scholarships were awarded to our graduating class of 2010.
  • Eighty-one students, almost one-third of the senior class, participated in Advanced Placement courses at the high school. Ninety-nine percent of the students who completed an AP course participated in their respective Advanced Placement test. Forty-five students were named to the list of AP Scholars, fifteen National AP Scholars, eleven with Honors and nineteen with Distinction.
  • This year, Newsweek magazine ranked Fort Lee High School in the top 6% of all high schools nationwide.
  • The Lewis F. Cole Middle School Math Team took 1st place in the Bergen County "Math Counts" Competition and placed 3rd overall in the state.
  • Five Fort Lee High School students won "Gold Keys" in the regional Scholastic Writing Competition, the oldest and most prestigious writing competition in the country, placing them in the national competition.
  • Two Fort Lee High School students were selected as Intel Science Talent Search 2010 Semifinalists. Research was done at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and at Fort Lee High School. The Intel Science Talent Search is America's most prestigious pre-college science competition.
