Sports Roundup: Senior Stories, Sports Awards

Here's a look at this week's top local sports stories on Fort Lee Patch.

More than 340 people gathered at The Fiesta in Wood Ridge June 8 to show their appreciation for those Fort Lee students involved in athletics along with their studies, Fort Lee Patch sports's Chris Murray reported this week.

Numerous awards and honors were given out, and Fort Lee Superintendent of Schools Raymond Bandlow and high school principal Priscilla Church addressed the crowd.

Male and female Athlete of the Year awards went to soccer and basketball player George Padin and track standout Nancie Sophias respectively.

George Padin has made an impact on Fort Lee High School, in sports and in the classroom.

Padin was unanimously selected as a Bergen County Scholar Athlete and is only the second player out of Fort Lee to have received the award.

It was a busy freshman year for Padin as he played freshman football, basketball and baseball, where the mere freshman received a varsity letter. But Padin’s most important athletic moments came during his sophomore through senior years when he focused on soccer and basketball. (full story)

Senior David Daniels was the captain of the Fort Lee bowling team this year and usually bowled anchor. He also played left back for the varsity soccer team during his time at Fort Lee High School.

Daniels has had many standout moments in his high school athletic career, including qualifying for the state tournament in bowling, achieving all league status for bowling, receiving the "unsung hero" award from the Bergen County Soccer Coaches association in 2010 and scoring a goal in a soccer game against Dwight Morrow from 30 yards out. Pedro Lopez played second base for the Fort Lee Bridgemen baseball team, and John Hroncic was a starting pitcher. Both players had successful careers for Fort Lee and will be missed by the team and Head Coach Mike Raftery when they graduate next week.

The team had a tough season but did qualify for the state tournament. It was a full team effort, but the play of Lopez and Hronic had a lot to do with qualifying for states. (full story)

And at the age of 11, our "Whiz Kid" this week, Silvester “Doogie” Eduardo, learned to skateboard when his older brother, Glenn, went out to learn with his friends in Fort Lee's Coytesville Park. Now 17, the younger brother excels in what his older brother spearheaded, flipping his board and crossing borders.

Eduardo, a Fort Lee High School junior, inspired by skateboard videogames and professionals like Andrew Reynolds, is now a professional-level-bound skateboarder--complete with endorsement deals--regularly boarding through the streets of New York and New Jersey. (full story)
