School District Announces 2011 Governor’s Teacher Award Recipients

The Governor's Teacher Recognition Program was developed in 1985 for the purpose of acknowledging teachers who exhibit outstanding performance, according to the State of New Jersey Department of Education.

The Fort Lee School District announced Tuesday its five 2011 Governor’s Teacher Recognition Program award recipients. They are Sixth Grade teacher Bryan Murray of School No. 1, Fifth Grade teacher Michele Weisberg of School No. 2, Sixth Grade teacher Brad Deitsch of School No. 3, Fourth Grade teacher Sandy Kim of School No. 4 and World Language-Spanish teacher Jahaira Francisco of Lewis F. Cole Middle School.

Not to be confused with the Teacher of the Year Program, “the Governor’s Teacher Recognition Program is based on the premise that teaching excellence is one of the most significant factors impacting student achievement and the quality of public schools. Further, acknowledging excellence encourages teachers to continue to strive towards that goal,” according to the state DOE.

“Teachers” are defined by the state Education Department as “those whose primary responsibility is classroom instruction" for the purposes of the award program.
