School Board to Make Up Cancelled Meeting Tuesday

The meeting, which was originally scheduled for May 21 but had to be postponed when there was a power outage at Fort Lee High School earlier that day, starts at 8 p.m. tonight in the high school auditorium.

The Tuesday evening will make up its regular business meeting that was cancelled last week.

The meeting takes place tonight (Tuesday) at 8 p.m. in the auditorium.

A power surge at the school—possibly the result of a lightning strike—, forcing school officials to dismiss students early and postpone the regularly scheduled board meeting.

School opened as scheduled the next day, but Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds Jack Denichilo told Patch that while the , his department couldn’t find anything to confirm that the cause originated from the baseball field, something a Patch reader had said she witnessed firsthand.

“We checked the lights on the field, and we checked the breaker box and control panel, and we checked the lights, and they all worked,” Denichilo said at the time. “We did check into it, but every light was on, and it may have hit the pole and sparked off the metal. He added, “We’ve had a good day at the high school.”

The auditorium was packed to near capacity on May 7, , as parents, students, faculty and community members attended to express their support for two teachers whose contracts recently were not renewed.

Some people questioned why Interim Superintendent of Schools Steven Engravalle, whose recommendation it was not to renew the two teachers’ contracts, was not in attendance at the meeting.

Engravalle later to explain that he was at a what he described as a “very important” meeting with K12 in the Washington, D.C. area that had been planned for a long time, but that he was proud of the Fort Lee students who spoke out at the school board meeting in support of their teachers.

The public portion of Tuesday’s BOE meeting starts at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium.
