The Lady Bridgemen had only one match this week, and they made the most of it, sweeping Dwight Morrow 5-0 on Friday. Jelena Sutovic stepped into the first singles spot for Fort Lee. Head coach Sheri Steckler is looking forward to playing Westwood on Monday at 4:15 p.m.

“I’m looking forward to the last match of the season and ending the season on an up note,” Steckler said.

Cross Country

The New Jersey State Section 2 Group II Championship meet took place on Saturday morning at Warinaco Park in Elizabeth, NJ. The boys team finished in eighth place out of 12 schools. The boys team tallied 209 total points.

The Lady Bridgemen finished with 231 points and finished in seventh place out of 11 schools. Head coach Ed Garrison is pleased overall with how the season turned out and is excited for the future.

“The boys and girls had a great season,” Garrison said. “Although we didn’t reach our goal of advancing to the Group II Championship Meet, most of the team improved over last year’s performances at the tough Warinanco Park Course. We look forward to having a great core of athletes returning for the 2012 Season.”

Athlete of the Week: Jelena Sutovic (girls tennis)

Jelena Sutovic came up big for the Lady Bridgemen as she stepped into the first singles spot during Friday’s match against Dwight Morrow, filling in for an injured player. The team won that match 5-0 with Sutovic’s help.

Head coach Sheri Steckler was very happy with the job that Sutovic did. Sutovic, a senior, loves the game of tennis and it certainly shows on the court.

“You only live once, but you get to serve twice,” said Sutovic.
