Lady Bridgemen Basketball Team to Raise Money to Help Fight Cancer

The "Coaches vs. Cancer" game, pitting Fort Lee against Dumont, is Tuesday evening at FLHS.

The Fort Lee Lady Bridgemen varsity girls’ basketball team plays host to the Dumont Huskies Tuesday in the “Coaches vs. Cancer” game to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

“The girls are so excited and have worked extremely hard to prepare for the gym to be decorated and support such a wonderful cause,” said head coach Stacie Zafiris. “We are really trying to make it a community event that Fort Lee can be proud of.”

It’s the second year the team is hosting an event to raise money for the American Cancer Society; last year the Lady Bridgemen played host to Rutherford High School in an independent matchup, Zafiris said.

“This year it is actually a league game against Dumont,” she said. “We actually became involved through a good friend of mine who hosts a softball tournament each year from Dwight Englewood.”

Local businesses are donating food and drinks to be sold at the game with all proceeds from the sale of refreshments benefiting the cancer society.

“This year the girls are extremely excited because we will be recognizing many different forms of cancer,” Zafiris said. “We will have a donation jar and a snack stand selling items, all of which will be given to the cancer society.”

She added, “We are encouraging everyone to attend and be a part of a wonderful cause, while also supporting the Lady Bridgemen.”

The “Coaches vs. Cancer” game between Fort Lee and Dumont is Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. in the gym.
