Hurricane Sandy Forces Fort Lee Schools to Close Monday

Fort Lee schools and district offices will be closed Monday in anticipation of Hurricane Sandy, school officials announced Sunday.

In addition, all sports, clubs, after-school activities and the district’s latch-key program have been cancelled for Monday, as has the Fort Lee Board of Education’s regular meeting, which was supposed to take place Monday at 8 p.m., said Superintendent of Schools Steven Engravalle in a statement on the school district’s website.

“Because forecasts are predicting the potential for an extended period of inclement weather, please check local television and radio as well as our district website for any updates regarding potential closings or other emergency information,” Engravalle said in the statement, which appears in its entirety below.

Engravalle also added links to information from the state, including a Hurricane Survival Guide, “to increase safety and comfort when adverse conditions occur.”

Engravalle also sent a phone message out to parents and staff informing them of the closure. The message is attached to this article as a "video" in case you missed it.

Engravalle’s message is as follows:

Due to the severe weather conditions anticipated from Hurricane Sandy and the declared statewide weather state of emergency, all Fort Lee district schools and offices will be CLOSED on Monday, October 29, 2012. Please also be advised that all sports, clubs, and after-school activities, the latch-key aftercare program, as well as the regularly scheduled board meeting are also cancelled for Monday, October 29, 2012.  

Because forecasts are predicting the potential for an extended period of inclement weather, please check local television and radio as well as our district website for any updates regarding potential closings or other emergency information.

Lastly, while we all know that cannot stop the onset of a natural hazard, there are steps we can take to increase our safety and comfort when adverse conditions occur. As such, we encourage you to read through the “Hurricane Survival Guide for New Jersey,” provided by the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management (NJOEM) and to take all recommended actions necessary to secure your family and home. This document and other very important emergency information provided by NJOEM may be accessed at http://ready.nj.gov/.
