Film Commission Brings Pro and Student Actors Together in HS Drama Fundraiser

Two students participated in a Hudson Shakespeare Company staging of Inherit the Wind that netted the high school drama department $550.

Two Fort Lee students shared the stage with Hudson Shakespeare Company actors in a municipal courtroom rendition of Inherit the Wind last weekend that raised $550 for the high school drama department.

The two students, Cole Nelson and Samantha Rubin, played roles alongside professional actors in the play based on the Scopes Trial.

The Film Commission also ran a screening of the 1960 film based off the play.

The Hudson Shakespeare Company first used the borough court last year for another courtroom drama, To Kill a Mockingbird, but this is the first time that student actors have participated.

Film commissioner Tom Meyers said that the relationship between the theater company and high school drama department could continue in the company’s future Fort Lee events.

“They’re hopeful they can use some more students for Shakespeare in the park,” he said.

This is the second fundraiser run by the Film Commission for high school theater this year; a February John Barrymore Birthday Fundraiser raised over $2,000, with which the department purchased a new stage backdrop.

“Unfortunately in difficult economic times the first thing they cut is the arts,” Meyers said. “So we’re glad we can help.”
