BOE to Consider Asbestos, Ethics, Candidates to Debate This Week

The Fort Lee Board of Education meets Monday at 8 p.m. in the Fort Lee High School library for a regular business meeting.

The agenda for the meeting, which can be downloaded here or by visiting the school district’s website, is highlighted by, among other items, a resolution approving professional asbestos services at Fort Lee School No. 1, School No. 3, School No. 4, Lewis F. Cole Middle School and the high school for the remaining “referendum projects” approved by Fort Lee voters in January.

If approved, Karl & Associates, Inc. will perform “asbestos evaluation” at School No. 4 at an estimated cost of $9,620 and “investigation and sampling” for high school and middle school lab renovations at an estimated cost of $4,975; for window replacement at the high school and Schools No. 1 and No. 3 at a total estimated cost of $10,270; and for classroom renovations planned at the middle school estimated at $4,350.

The school board is also expected Monday to adopt the “New Jersey School Board Member Code of Ethics,” which can be found on the State of New Jersey Department of Education’s website.

School officials also announced recently that the BOE will hold a special public work session on Monday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. in the high school library. The purpose of the special public session is “goal setting” for the 2012-2013 school year, officials said.

Also of note this week is that the candidates for seats on the Fort Lee Board of Education will square off at in a debate at Lewis F. Cole Middle School on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m. The debate is sponsored by the United Homeowners of Fort Lee.

After former candidates Tracy Mattei and Steve Byoun withdrew their names from the ballot last month to fill one of the three-year terms, it left just four candidates for three seats: incumbent John Bang, Esther Han Silver, Holly Morell and David Sarnoff.

In addition, Candace “Candee” Romba is running unopposed to serve out the remaining year of former board president Arthur Levine’s unexpired term. Levine resigned from the board in August.
