Amato Named Interim Superintendent of Schools

The Fort Lee Board of Education, after weeks of searching, has voted Assistant Superintendent Sharon Amato back to the district’s top position—temporarily.

The board voted 5-3 Monday night on the appointment, with trustees David Sarnoff, Joseph Surace and Helen Yoon in opposition, according to a report on northjersey.com. Trustee Candee Romba was absent.

Amato will be paid an additional $1,850 per month while serving as interim superintendent, according to her contract.

The BOE had offered contracts to two superintendent candidates and both times the offers were rejected, according to Board Attorney Dennis McKeever.

The district had been without a superintendent for approximately five weeks. Trustees had feared state or county intervention in the selection of a superintendent, but school officials contended that their "good-faith effort in getting the position filled" has relegated outside action to an outside possibility.

Amato was selected to temporarily fill the superintendent position after the school board accepted the resignation of Steven Engravalle in March.

Her contract as interim super expired on June 30 and the district spent the proceeding weeks searching for a full time replacement to no avail.
