Election Preview: Fort Lee Borough Council, School Board

A total of nine candidates are running—four for two seats on the Council, and five for four seats—three, three-year terms and one unexpired one-year term—on the BOE.

Two Fort Lee Borough Council seats will be up for election on the November ballot.

Republican challengers Thomas A. Bennett and Peter B. Campbell will attempt to unseat Democratic incumbent Councilmen Harvey Sohmer and Joseph L. Cervieri, the current Council president.

But while the race for Borough Council is just that straightforward, the Fort Lee Board of Education race is where things get a little more complicated.

The BOE announced in September that it has only one candidate who will appear on the November ballot to fill the rest of former board president Arthur Levine’s unexpired term; Levine resigned from the board in the beginning of August.

But the BOE also announced that that two of the on the board had withdrawn their names from the November ballot, leaving just four candidates for three seats.

So Candace Romba will be the only name on the ballot to serve out the remaining year of Levine’s term, while John Bang, the only incumbent school board member running this year, Esther Han Silver, Holly Morell and David Sarnoff will vie for the three, three-year seats.
