Teaneck Accountant Accused of Filing False Tax Returns

Sixto Rodriguez fabricated information on returns for clients and did not properly report his own income, Department of Treasury said.

A Teaneck accountant has been indicted on 21 counts filing fraudulent tax returns for clients and three counts of filing false returns for himself, the U.S. Department of Treasury said.

Sixto Rodriguez, whose age was not released, was arrested Wednesday morning by IRS-Criminal Investigation agents in Kissimmee, Fla.

Rodriguez, who operated 123 Taxes out of his Teaneck residence, has been accused of preparing at least 80 fraudulent tax returns for clients between 2008 and 2011.

Rodriguez fabricated and inflated Schedule A itemized deductions like non-reimbursed employee business expenses and charitable contributions, the Department of Treasury said.

Rodriguez also fabricated education expenses so his clients could obtain educational credits on their returns, according to the indictment.

Rodriguez also fabricated and inflated Schedule C business expenses and losses and Schedule E expenses related to rental real estate losses, according to the indictment.

Rodriguez was able to obtain tax refunds for his clients that were more than they were lawfully entitled to receive that totaled $234,768, according to the indictment.

According to the indictment, Rodriguez also failed to properly report all of the income he earned between 2007 and 2009.

Rodriguez reported he had no taxable income in 2007 and 2008 and reported approximately $4,558 in 2009, the indictment said. However, his actual taxable income was $80,807 in 2007, $96,650 in 2008 and $113,984 in 2009, according to the indictment.

Rodriguez faces up to three years in prison for each count in the indictment if convicted.
