The Fort Lee Police Department will receive funds for a new police dog through a donation from Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s charitable foundation, according to a published report.
"This grant will enable Fort Lee to expand our K-9 unit and enhance the safety of our community through proactive controls which combat drugs and criminal activity," Chief Keith Bendul of the Fort Lee Police said in the NJ.com report.
Roethlisberger’s foundation also donated to Fairfield police, where the money will fund upgrades to the department’s K-9 unit patrol car. The amount of the donation was not immediately known.
Fort Lee’s K-9 unit has been credited with several large drug seizures, including one over the summer where police said a dog sniffed out 15 pounds of marijuana.
