Prosecuter's Office Investigating Hit-And-Run Outside Community Center

Bergen County Prosecutor's Office confirmed accident but released few details.

Fort Lee police and county investigators remained at the scene Monday night of an apparent fatal hit-and-run in front of the Jack Alter Fort Lee Community Center.

The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office is investigating what it called a "serious motor vehicle accident" that occurred at about 5 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Anderson Avenue and Inwood Terrace involving "a vehicle that struck a pedestrian," Bergen County First Assistant Prosecutor John Higgins confirmed Tuesday morning. But county prosecutors released no further details.

NBC New York reported that homicide investigators were looking into the accident, in which a woman was reportedly killed, in part to determine "whether the driver hit the victim on purpose."

Pix 11 News reported on its 10 p.m. broadcast Monday that a black, four-door Hyundai Sonata fled south from the scene, and that witnesses said the car hit the woman “multiple times.”

Pix 11 also showed an aerial view of a body near the intersection, and reported that witnesses who saw the female victim described her as “very young.”

Later Monday night, police found the car they believe was involved in the hit-and-run near 10th Street and Stillwell Avenue, Channel 7 Eyewitness News reported Monday on its 11 p.m. broadcast.

The TV station also reported that Bergen County prosecutors did not confirm that they were investigating the incident as murder Monday, and that the Port Authority was on alert, "especially at the airports, to ensure the suspect doesn't flee the area.”

Fort Lee Police were not releasing any information Tuesday morning, citing the ongoing county investigation.

Patch will provide further details as more information becomes available.
