Power Out In Many Parts Of Town; Wires, Trees Down

Fire Chief Keith Sabatino cautions residents to stay inside, "Downed wires and fallen trees make for extremely dangerous conditions."

Borough officials report that most residents north of the George Washington Bridge are without power. So are residents in the south side of town along Abbott Boulevard. The Hampshire House Apartments and parts of the Horizon House are also currently powerless.

As of midnight, PSE&G is reporting between 5,001 and 10,000 customers without power in Fort Lee according to its power outage map. It is uncertain at this time when power will be restored. PSE&G had to cease any overnight repairs as wind gusts reached over 45mph. Crews will begin repair work around 8am Tuesday morning.

Officials are reporting that many trees and wires have fallen around town making borough roads impassable. The police and fire department responded to a call of a large tree that fell on a house on Anderson Avenue, causing serious structural damage. A number of telephone poles have also come down leaving some residents in the Coytesville area without landline phone service.

Fire Chief Keith Sabatino told Patch that many of the borough's roads are closed due to downed wires, trees and debris of branches.

"I encourage every resident to stay off the roads until this storm has passed," he said. "PSE&G have pulled their repair crews because conditions are too dangerous."

He also advised that people stay off the roads tomorrow as well.

"There's a lot of clean-up that's going to have to take place tomorrow," Sabatino said. "And PSE&G will be out resuming repair work."

Sabatino also reported that five apartments in the Horizon House have been evacuated due to windows blowing out.
