Police Pass State Test, Cleared to Issue E-Tickets

Borough officials say the technology has been installed in four of six cars, and that 30 to 35 violations had been issued as of Friday.

The Fort Lee Police Department has begun issuing e-tickets, having now installed e-ticket readers, software and printers in four of the six police cars it is using in a demonstration project borough and police officials hope will make issuing tickets for traffic violations safer for police officers, faster for both officers and motorists and more efficient for the courts to process and violators to pay.

Fort Lee Councilman Jan Goldberg, who pushed for a resolution passed in May that cleared the way for the e-ticketing system, told Patch that the police department has successfully passed the state’s data submission test, that all necessary officer training has been completed and that the program is now live.

“[Fictitious] test data is entered into the e-ticket system and is transmitted to the state,” as Goldberg explained the data submission test. “They then download the info to the main terminals and respond to the borough. All tests went smoothly, and the data was accepted for Fort Lee to go live.”

Goldberg said that as of Friday, “30 to 35 violations have been issued via e-tickets.”

“I personally am very pleased with how fast the police have gotten the system up and running,” Goldberg said. “There have been no major glitches or complaints.”

Goldberg also said he plans to check with the courts this week to see how the program is working on their end.

Eventually six Fort Lee police cars will have e-ticketing capabilities in the early stages; police are waiting for one new car previously slated to have the technology installed and an existing car that has been experiencing “non-related e-ticket problems” to be repaired, according to Goldberg.

“If we continue to see success with InfoCop [GTBM of East Rutherford is currently providing the Fort Lee Police Department with its Info-Cop and e-ticketing technology] as expected, I would hope the Mayor and Council would see fit to expand the contract and install the system in the entire fleet in the very near future,” Goldberg said.
