Newark Man Charged With Robbing Fort Lee Gas Station Attendant

Police said the man made off with $1,800 he allegedly lifted from the Exxon station employee's pocket after a brief scrap.

A Newark man has been charged in connection with an alleged robbery earlier this week at a Fort Lee gas station, police said.

Wahiduddi T. Kimbrough, 26, of Newark, was charged with one count of robbery with force for allegedly stealing $1,800 in cash from a gas station attendant at the Exxon station at 1616 Bergen Blvd. at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Kimbrough allegedly pulled into the station, bought some motor oil, discarded the bottles, and then went back to buy a can of Red Bull, according to Fort Lee police.

While he was paying for the Red Bull, Kimbrough allegedly reached into the attendant’s jacket pocket and, after a struggle, was able to grab the cash, according to police.

Kimbrough then got back into his car fled the scene, police said.

Police say detectives investigating the incident found Kimbrough’s wallet, which he apparently dropped during the scuffle. The Bergen County Sheriff’s Department also responded and processed the quart-sized bottles off oil Kimbrough had discarded, which revealed latent prints, according to police.

Though detectives determined that the documents in the wallet were false identification, the photos matched Kimbrough’s description. Further investigation revealed that Kimbrough had an “extensive criminal record for robbery” and an outstanding warrant in Newark for robbery, police said, adding that the latent print lifted from the motor oil bottle was a positive match.

With assistance from the Newark Major Crimes Unit, the Newark Fugitive Unit and U.S. Marshalls, detectives were able to track Kimbrough down at an apartment in Newark, where they arrested him “without incident,” police said.

The gas station attendant suffered what police described as a “minor injury to his hand” as a result of the scuffle.

Kimbrough is currently being held at the Newark Police Department Jail on other charges. Bail was set at $250,000.
