Korean War Veterans Biking from NJ to DC

Fort Lee Police joined a dozen determined veterans last weekend for an event spanning across the northeast to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice Agreement.

Twelve disabled Korean War Veterans biked from the United Nations, where they thanked member nations for fighting alongside South Korea during the three year conflict before arriving at the Fort Lee Korean War Memorial Site.

There they were greeted by the Korean and Vietnam War veterans based out of Fort Lee.

“I was truly impressed by these men,” said Deputy Chief Tim Ford. “Most of them do not have use of their legs and use tricycles that are powered by their arms.”

“They held a memorial service before departing on a long journey,” said Fort Lee Police Sgt. Steve No. “Deputy Chief Ford, Captain [Robert] Zevits, [Police Officer] Andres Kim and I were also present and attended the memorial service as well.”

Two patrol vehicles driven by Kim and No escorted the veterans to their next resting site at Port Imperial in Weehawken.

On Saturday the veterans are scheduled to attend a ceremony marking Korean War Armistice Day at the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C, where a letter of gratitude to the American people will be read.

President Obama is scheduled to join the ceremony, No said.

The following day veterans will join members of the Paralyzed Veterans of America and race together to an Annapolis, MD, lighthouse. There where they will conclude the event with the declaration of a statement emphasizing the necessity of the South Korean-U.S. alliance.
