Police Chase Truck from Nanuet Through Fort Lee Until Crash in Edgewater

No police officers were injured when fleeing vehicle collided with a Fort Lee police car.

A report of an attempted theft at the Home Depot store in Nanuet on Thursday afternoon led to a chase that raced across Route 59 and eventually ended in a crash in Edgewater, N.J., according to police.

Clarkstown police said a town officer attempted to question two men in a pickup truck at the Home Deport about 1 p.m. in connection with an attempted theft. Clarkstown police said the men drove off and led police on a chase eastbound on Rout 59 to Middletown Road, where the chase headed southbound.

Clarkstown police said town officers lost sight of the truck as they approached Pearl River. However, police said Orangetown officers spotted the pickup and continued the chase, which went into New Jersey.

Police said the chase ended in Edgewater, where the two men in the pickup ran from the truck and were being chased by police officers.

Clarkstown police said no one was injured during the part of the chase in Clarkstown.

A Fort Lee police car was struck during the chase near Center Avenue and Bridge Plaza North, according to police. No police officers were injured in the crash, but the truck sustained heavy front-end damage.

Police continued their pursuit of the gray Dodge pickup south on River Road into Edgewater, where the chase apparently ended near the Hess Oil Terminal. The suspects fled on foot into a vacant building, police said. The truck also struck a civilian vehicle in Edgewater on River Road, according to police.

A Pennsylvania man was arrested after he and another man ran from their wrecked truck, police said. Police were still seeking the second man involved.

Port Authority Police, New Jersey State Police and Edgewater Police were at the scene in Edgewater, along with Fort Lee Police. The chase and ensuing accident closed portions of the southbound lanes of River Road.
