None Injured In Main St. Car Fire

Neither the female driver nor her passenger was injured in the blaze, which took Fort Lee firemen little time to extinguish.

Fort Lee firefighters from Firehouse No. 3 easily extinguished a car fire on Main St. Thursday afternoon, officials said. The fire resulted in no injuries but significant damage to the car.

“Evidently something in the engine compartment [caused the fire],” said Battalion Chief Mark Sulcov of the Fort Lee Fire Department, adding that the car was heading toward Leonia on Main St. near the Fort Lee Ambulance Corps building when the incident occurred.

“The woman who was driving it complained that the car was starting to sputter and miss-fire—like a loss of power,” Sulcov said. “She pulled to the curb and then started seeing smoke coming out of the engine compartment.”

The driver and one female passenger managed escape the car without injury, according to Sulcov, who said the firefighters then extinguished the fire “in short order” and described the incident as “routine.”

“There was very severe damage to the engine compartment but no injuries,” Sulcov said.
