Fort Lee Couple Hit By Car on Eve of Holiday Weekend

Police say the two pedestrians were crossing in the crosswalk near Monument Park on Palisade Avenue when they were struck by a car making a left turn in broad daylight. The driver was charged.

A Fort Lee husband and wife were hit by a car Friday afternoon as they were crossing the street at what would seem like the relatively safe intersection of Palisade Avenue and Angioletti Place, police said.

The 63-year-old man and his 58-year-old wife were on the side of Palisade at about 4:25 p.m. on Friday, May 25, when they began crossing the street in the crosswalk on the south side of the intersection toward the corner of , according to Capt. Timothy Ford of the .

“It’s like a ‘T’ intersection; you’ve got Angioletti Place coming into Palisade Avenue there,” Ford said. “The vehicle was coming west on Angioletti and making a left turn to proceed south on Palisade. As it did so, it struck the two pedestrians.”

Ford said the driver, Angeliki Meimaris-Balask, 49, of Fort Lee, was charged with careless driving.

The couple were treated at the scene by members of the Fort Lee Ambulance Corps and transported to Hackensack Hospital with what Ford described as “non-life-threatening” injuries.

The incident came less than a week after a by a car that was backing up in the parking lot at Whiteman Plaza and from her injuries.

It also further served to highlight the problem of pedestrians getting hit by cars in the borough that seems to have police scratching their heads even as they continue to with increased enforcement of and laws.

“We’re doing whatever we can to protect pedestrians,” Ford said. “We’re citing motorists. We’re citing jaywalkers.”
