Fashionista Penned List Of Women Banned From Funeral Before GWB Plunge

Budding designer from Paramus left "suicide diary;" claimed she was bullied, according to newspaper report.

The tragic tale of a 22-year-old aspiring fashion designer who took her own life by jumping from the George Washington Bridge on Wednesday —allegedly a victim of bullying, according to the NY Post — has attracted widespread attention on social networking sites.

Riders on a jitney bus saw Ashley A. Riggitano, originally from Paramus, plunge from the New Jersey-bound lanes at around 4:40 p.m., the report said. She reportedly left a Louis Vuitton bag containing pages of notes in a "suicide diary," which included a list of five women banned from her funeral, on the bridge walkway.

A Facebook page, “R.I.P. Ashley Riggitano” surfaced on Friday quickly getting tens of hundreds of ‘likes’ just hours after it was created. Condolences quickly poured in, with many carrying a strong anti-bullying message. Several posters used the phrase, “tragic ending for a beautiful girl."

“This is such a sad story :( I'm so sorry you felt like you had to do this, girls are truly cruel sometimes. RIP Ashley!,” wrote Nicole Leffler.

“R.I.P Sweetie Pie Ashley! This news made me cry. That's why I am in the fight against BULLYING,” wrote Michelle Hill.

Riggitano was apparently bullied by friends in the fashion industry, according to the Post report. The girls banned from her funeral were reportedly from work and college.

“All my other ‘friends’ are in it for gossip,” she wrote in the letter, the Post reported. “Never there.”

Riggitano had attempted to commit suicide before, the newspaper reported.

The Laboratory Institute of Merchandising student interned with Tommy Hilfiger, Nicole Miller and jewelry designer Alex Woo.

“The entire LIM College community is saddened by the loss of Ashley. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time," school spokeswoman Meredith Finnin said in a statement.

She founded a company called Missfits, where she designed jewelry. The company was part of efforts to raise money for a young Bergen County boy battling cancer.

Riggitano is the daughter of Roy Riggitano, the Chief Financial Officer of Elmwood Park, according to NorthJersey.com. She graduated from Immaculate Heart Academy in Washington Township, according to the NorthJersey.com report.

The George Washington Bridge saw a record number of suicides last year, with 18 people leaping to their deaths.

The problem is that our lenient, permissive culture is soft on bullies from the get-go. In school, everyone is taught to just be themselves, and so bullies remain bullies and wimps remain wimps. That's our education system -- morally rotten to the core. It should be teaching bullies compassion and wimps how to be tough, but the ditzes who run K-12 refuse to make value judgments on anyone or anything except for the usual politically correct nonsense. Then these same bullies grow into adults.....the stupid ones end up in jail, but our permissive society says it's not their fault, it's just their environment, and out they go, on parole. The smart ones find some organization which rewards their aggression and up they go, to the top. I guess we should be thankful we're not a third-world country, where bullies shoot their way into power and govern as dictators. But then, when we go after the dictators and try to remove them, the same cultural permissiveness that makes excuses for homegrown bullies whine about our interfering in other nations' affairs. Bullies are in every society and culture. The problem is that our permissive culture refuses to stigmatize them and treat their attitudes and behavior as wicked and evil.

All you people have some very interesting comments to discuss but should be done in an open forum not under the death of this young girl. This may be the last spotlight she has and most of you are trying to jump in it for your own agenda and fame. That's pretty sad. Let this be about her and her rememberence of the good things she's done.

Bullies always get what they deserve in the end. Look at Lance Armstrong for example. HE IS NO LONGER THE TOP DOG. and before he's done he is going to lose it all and deservingly so! Lets all pray for Ashley, rest her soul! Jake

Why not make the bullies who tormented her famous? Put their names and faces up in lights and let nature take its course.

Its so sad she ended her life for them. The 5 people who have caused this should be ashamed and need to keep there heads down. God will deal with you in his own time. You will answer for it,there is no way out of it. Shame on you 5. RIP.

I agree with you Katy. Bullying is a much more serious problem that society thinks. Most kid's are afraid to report it in fear of retaliation from the Bully. And, most schools do not do enough about. This poor young, up and coming, beautiful woman took her life because her fellow fashion designer friends???? What kind of friend's are these?? Disgusting. These are insecure and jealous people who want to make themselves feel better when they can put someone else down. What warped thinking. I was lucky as far as bullying when I was a kid. I was a very short kid and still am as a man, but, the few times I was "so called" bullied, I got tired of it and turned around a cold cocked 3 in my life, and was never picked on again, by these 3 bullies of mine. I'm not suggesting 2 wrongs make a right, but, I'm not going to let anyone bully me around. I will stand up for myself and take and consequences that may come my way. Put all the Bullies together in one big building and let them go at each other. My prayers are with this young woman's family and friends.

If I read one more poster who says "so very sad"......it's frankly nauseating. There's no hint of outrage in such sentiments. No sense that what happened is intolerable.

Bullies will always be with us. They take pleasure in belittling others to feed themselves. I too have been bullied, especially in the work world. Bullies do not discriminate, nor do they care of the damage being done. Bullies are a cancer that continues to grow. When you do fight back then YOU are held accountable for your actions. Bullies are evil and soul-less demons. They too will get theirs someday, unfortunately most of the bullies victims don't get to see justice play out. That is about the only solace the victims can strive for. Not very satisfying, but it is better than nothing. To read about this creative person bullied to choose suicide it heart wrenching, and I pray that she will find peace and her tormentors get their due justice swiftly.

With all the tragedy happening in this country insofar as poltics, I would put this story in the Top 3 list. This young woman had so much going for her, with a good heart of donating money from her newly founded company to a cancer stricken boy. This just makes me sickened with sadness for her of what she went through, and her family for what they must be enduring at this moment. One day, these people who bullied her, will someday meet up with others who are also bullies, worse than they are, and then, and only then, they will feel what this woman had felt to do so a tragic thing to herself. This young woman should have been happy with her life ahead of her. She obviously was very talented and a good soul. May God Bless Ashley and keep her soul in His arms, and be with Ashley's family to find some peace. I also hope that these girls/guys who where doing this to Ashley are taken to court with a wrongful death suit against them, by Ashley's family.

Although this is always tragic when someone takes their life but this young woman was 22yrs old, not a teenager or child. It seems she was quite fragile if she had tried this before. Also maybe she was depressed. Health professionals have said that depression will precede suicide. Everyone who is bullied does not commit suicide.

Jon, I absolutely agree! A world without Christ is a lost one!! We have got to help each other. If you happen to be in the presence of someone wherever it may be, please know that you can either add to their day or be the one to push he/she over the edge. For this young lady, I don't know if she was having other problems outside of the bullying but, nevertheless, she is no longer on this earth and a father and mother has lost their child. Be careful what you say about anyone's misfortune bc none of us are unshakable!! Please know this!!

It Is SO VERY SAD that someone felt this horrible over being bullied.....you seem the same way.....Carma is true and for whom ever this was I would be worried about that if I were them..... My Heart goes out to Ashley & her family and her friends....... I just wish I was able to give her the courage to stand up to ppl like that.

Where is your sympathy for the young girl who took her life because she was driven to it by bad people? The majority of your hate remarks go to Shawn to whom you gave exactly what he was looking for - ATTENTION!. Now that you have made Shawn's day - let's pray for the beautiful young lady and her family.

I said it before Lance Armstrong was a bully. Look where it got him. Eventually ALL bullies crumble. I pray for Ashley's soul. Jake

Blame it on bullying...whatever...suicide is a coward's act. Shame on her for doing this to her family. She is accountable for her actions, not the women who were "banned" from her funeral. They will continue going to parties, falling in and out of love and taking trips to Europe. She's still going to be dead.
Steve February 08, 2013 at 09:06 PM
This would be like me bullying Brad Pitt, and him committing suicide. Give me a break. Her dad was rich, she had money to burn, she had her own design business, and she was better looking than 99.9% of the women on earth. How do you bully someone like that? The women she didn't want at her funeral were jealous, not bullies. It's called class and beauty envy.

Watch: The Devil wears Prada (BTW if you can't get me my book don't bother coming in to work.) The whole point to that movie was if you pass the test and can deliver the blue vase you'll get the promotion to head up the new post and receive the raise and bonus. If you wash out you didn't deserve the job in the first place.
THOR February 08, 2013 at 09:14 PM
OK lets all get real here. Bullies have been around forever. I was a victim in the 60"s of the same crap and I stood up to it and fought back. Kids these days are SPOILED BABIES with smart phones , hand out money with no home chores, get what they want from parents who don"t want to hear a blah blah blah kid, get FANCY CARS when graduation time comes around ( over 80K ) and so on. I live on Long Island and North Jersey. MALL RAT BRATS ... I see it all the time. If you get picked on FIGHT BACK end of story or take the beating. PERIOD The SILVER SPOON does have a tarnished side.

you break his nose. He pulls a knife or a gun or they get your brother on his way from school. That broken nose and desire to face him. Is it worth what will follow? No never. Move out. Leave them behind the wheel, many turns ago.

There is one universal emotion that we all need and that is love. Love is acceptance and acceptance helps to guard against most other bad emotions. Ashley was beautiful and successful by all standards, but those 5 women were jealous and I am sure made Ashleys life so hard. May we all find love and inner peace that will carry us through tough times. God bless you all!
