Local School-kids compete in Double-Dutch Classic

Fort the fifth consecutive year, students from the Japanese Childrens Society will compete in the Double Dutch Holiay Classic at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem.

Not yet part of the Olympics this year, 2012, teams from Japan, Europe, and throughout the US will compete in the sport, which is gaining acceptance as a “true” competitive sport, far beyond two ropes twirling in a schoolyard at recess.

As a sport, Double-Dutch attracts boys as well as girls.  Their routines combine elements of tap, ballet and break-dancing.

The 6th grade Iku-ei Samurai Jumpers from the 4th and 5th grades at the school will compete in Singles, Doubles and Fusion, says their coach Mr. Kato. He got involved in the “sport” of Double-Dutch when a student in Japan, and introduced it to the Japanese Childrens Society, when he joined the faculty of the school in Englewood Cliffs.

Events include Singles, Speed and Compulsory Divisions as well as Novice Fusion, including 4th and 6th grade students.
