Teaneck Group Fundraising For Typhoon Haiyan Victims

A Teaneck-based Filipino organization has launched a fundraising effort to aid victims of Typhoon Haiyan, which killed at least 4,000 people in the Philippines and left millions displaced.

F.A.S.T., the Filipino American Society of Teaneck, announced on its website that money will be directed through impacted archdioceses in the Philippines, working with member Bishop Julius Tonel of Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay, Philippines. Funds raised will also go to Sagip Kapamilya, the emergency humanitarian assistance program of the ABS-CBN Foundation.

"We don't want to give the money to a big organization where much of it will go towards operations," Leoni Brady, president of F.A.S.T. told the Suburbanite. "We want to help the neediest children and families in the Philippines."

According to the United Nations, more than 13 million people have been affected by the Nov. 8 storm. While the death toll has fluctuated significantly, officials say the grim total might not ever be known and emergency crews haven’t yet reached some remote islands.
