Classic Broadway with a Tribute to Bob Dylan presented by Nina Deutsch

On Sunday, August 10th at 2pm, the Fort Lee
Public Library will welcome internationally acclaimed pianist, singer and speaker, Nina Deutsch. The
program, entitled “Classic Broadway with a Tribute to Bob Dylan” is funded by the Horizons
Speaker Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of
the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The
featured artist, Nina Deutsch, is an accomplished musician who not only celebrates
music history, but has made some history of her own. Ms. Deutsch, a pioneer in USA-China
cultural relations, premiered the performance of “Blowin' in the Wind”, and other
American classics to Chinese audiences during her historic visit to Peking in
1982. She is credited with being the first American to re-introduce American music
to China in the post-Mao era. (The 1982 videotape of her historic Peking
concert is today housed in the presidential library of former President, George
H. W. Bush and, in the Paley Center in New York City.)

During that
historic concert and in many since, Ms. Deutsch has carried Bob Dylan's
universal message of peace, friendship, and humanity. She says the iconic
artist not only deeply influenced her life but left a lasting impact on 20th
and 21st century music. "I believe that Bob Dylan is the voice of humanism
through music. He teaches people to look at behavior more closely". Interestingly,
Ms. Deutsch is the only classical pianist licensed by Dylan to record his music.
Her current musical program features songs and quotes from Dylan's book,"
Tarantula", and gives music examples at the piano of his early
predecessors in American folk music, such as Stephen Foster. Ms. Deutsch said,
“Concert goers do more than listen, at these performances, they participate,
celebrating in a very special way, our shared musical heritage.” Ms. Deutsch is
a classical pianist and pop-singer pianist, a graduate of Julliard and Yale who
shares her appreciation and knowledge of music through examples at the piano,
showing, for instance, the relationship between folk and classical music. She
explained, “In addition to lifting peoples' spirits with the feeling of this
music, I hope to enrich their understanding of it.” Ms. Deutsch is a long time resident
of Leonia where she teaches piano and voice while continuing her performance
programs for the New Jersey Council
for the Humanities.
