Week In Review: BOE To Appoint Acting Superintendent Monday

Fort Lee Board of Education officials Tuesday issued a letter to parents of children in the school district assuring them that the BOE is “committed to actively seeking the best-qualified and most capable candidate for the position of Superintendent” in the wake of current Superintendent Raymond Bandlow’s recent resignation.

Bandlow will leave the Fort Lee School District on Oct. 31 to assume the duties of Superintendent in Beacon, N.Y. (Full Story)

Fort Lee police and fire officials say a two-car accident Tuesday on Route 1 and 9 South in Fort Lee near the exit to Bergen Blvd. sent one car careening into a telephone pole, bringing down two transformers and causing a ground fire, closing the highway and at least temporarily affecting traffic coming off the George Washington Bridge into New Jersey. Democratic lawmakers blasted the Port Authority toll hikes last Sunday--the first day the increased tolls went into effect--calling the higher tolls a tax increase brought on by Gov. Christie.

“We are here today to tell you that Democrats would defend Bergen families. Democrats will fight for Bergen families, and clearly, clearly, Chris Christie is no friend to Bergen County,” State Sen. Loretta Weinberg said.

“This is a tax on working people and it’s unprecedented,” said Assemblyman Gordon Johnson. (Full Story)

The International Day of Peace, Wednesday, Sept. 21, was commemorated in Fort lee and Leonia by peacemakers who gathered to pay homage to the cause in various ways, including a walk, readings, performances and a candlelight vigil.

The events, organized by The Leonia Peace Group, and co-sponsored by The Fort Lee Vigil and The Teaneck Vigil, launched in Fort Lee with a walk that began at 4 p.m. at the corner of Lemoine Ave. and Bruce Reynolds Blvd. and ended about 40 minutes later at the United Methodist Church in Leonia, before the peace pole, where The International Day of Peace has focused its tribute in Leonia for the past 10 years. The Fort Lee Borough Council introduced an ordinance Thursday to refund $7.5 million in general obligation bonds. A public hearing on the ordinance officials say will save the borough hundreds of thousands of dollars is scheduled for Oct. 13. (Full Story)

Fort Lee firefighters from Firehouse No. 3 easily extinguished a car fire on Main St. Thursday afternoon, officials said. The fire resulted in no injuries but significant damage to the car. (Full Story)

The Fort Lee Rotary last week took local veterans of World War II and other conflicts on a day-long bus trip to Washington, D.C. to view several monuments honoring fallen American soldiers. The trip was free to VFW members, in honor of their service to the country.

In all, 14 VFW members from Fort Lee and nearby towns attended, in addition to 16 Rotarians and friends. Highlights of the tour were the National World War II Memorial, the Iwo Jima Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. (Full Story)

And Halloween City officially opened its doors Thursday in the space that formerly occupied Borders. For anyone that has made the annual pilgrimage of horror to Party City in Edgewater, you will be thrilled that Halloween City is in town. Although owned by Party City, Halloween City (formerly Halloween USA) is Party City's seasonal sister. (Full Story)
