Week Ahead: School Board, Borough Get Back to Business

Music, Movies "under the stars" are also on tap this week with Wednesday and Saturday evening performances and a screening of the Universal classic "Jaws" at the Fort Lee Community Center.

The Fort Lee Board of Education meets Monday for the first time since it voted to for the next three years after months of concern surrounding his appointment.

At the same meeting, the school board that would have provided student accident insurance for the 2012-2013 school year at a cost of $52,207, when two board members abstained and one voted against the measure.

Board president Arthur Levine said a special meeting might be needed before the end of June if the school district wanted to have the insurance come July 1, but business administrator Cheryl Balletto said that when the board did not renew the insurance, she called the district’s broker and got it extended through July 31.

In order for the insurance to be extended beyond July 31, however, it will have to be approved by the board.

“I’m hoping that on July 9 the board will approve our new policy,” Balletto said at the time.

Although the agenda posted online Monday morning does not include resolutions regarding current principals, the board is also going to have to fill a at before the summer ends, as the issue of principals in the district in general has been one about which some have expressed strong concerns in recent weeks.

The BOE’s regular business meeting is Monday at 8 p.m., but if you’re planning on attending, note the location change announced by the school district last week: the meeting will take place in the library, also known as the Media Center, on the second floor, as opposed to the auditorium.

For those who are interested, the following borough meetings are also taking place this week:

  • The Fort Lee Zoning Board of Adjustment meets Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in ’s Council Chambers. The agenda for the meeting is available by clicking here.
  • The Fort Lee Mayor and Council will meet Thursday for an executive session, which will begin in closed session at 6 p.m. and reopen to the public “no earlier than” 8 p.m., according to officials, in Borough Hall’s second-floor executive conference room. The agenda for the meeting will be available in the Office of the Borough Clerk on Wednesday at 2 p.m. and also on the borough’s website.

If government meetings are not your thing but you’re up for some entertainment “under the stars,” you’re in luck—as you will be pretty much every week for the rest of the summer.

The kicks off its annual this week with a 7:30 p.m. performance by The Bronx Wanderers.

Their ultimate tribute to Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons and Dion will feature crowd favorites “Sherry”, “Big Girls Don’t Cry”, “Walk Like A Man”, “Runaround Sue”, “The Wanderer”, and many more. They will bring you the best of The Four Seasons, The Jersey Boys, the Bronx and Beyond.

On Saturday, the Fort Lee Film Commission continues its in commemoration of the film giant’s 100th anniversary, which dates back to its earliest days in Fort Lee, with 1970s-era funk courtesy of The Hit Men, followed by a screening of the 1975 classic, Jaws, starring Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss, and directed by Steven Spielberg.

Each Saturday evening throughout the summer, “Movies &Music Under the Stars” starts with a musical performance at 7 p.m. at the community center and that week’s Universal Studios “feature presentation” starting at sunset.
