School Security, Police Hires Top Week’s Local News

Fort Lee’s Superintendent of Schools, attending his first public school board meeting since finishing his two-month leave of absence, said Monday that school security should be a priority, especially in the wake of the deadly school shooting in Newtown, Conn. in December, and that if he had it his way, there would be a police officer in every public school building in the Fort Lee district.

Fort Lee officials planned to meet with school and police officials Wednesday, and Mayor Mark Sokolich anticipated announcing soon after that two full-time school resource officers will be included in the next round of police hires.

For the past 40 years, Intermedia, an art and literary magazine created by 7th and 8th grade students at Fort Lee’s Lewis F. Cole Middle School for the entire student body, has been submitted to Columbia University for judging in various categories by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA). The school’s 2011-12 edition is no exception, according to one of two Intermedia advisors, Nina Anderson, an Art teacher at the middle school, who works with media specialist Mrs. Spahn to advise the students who create the publication.

Fort Lee Rec Basketball League Opens Season With Most Girls Ever

The Fort Lee Girls Recreation Basketball League held its Opening Night Festivities Tuesday to kick off the season. Hosted by league president Michael Klein, the night brought more than 400 people to the Lewis F. Cole Middle School gym.

Lady Bridgemen Basketball Team to Raise Money for Cancer Society

The Fort Lee Lady Bridgemen basketball team hosts Dumont Thursday, but it won’t be any ordinary game. It’s the third annual “Coaches vs. Cancer” game to raise money for the American Cancer Society, and the team hopes to raise more money this year for those fighting cancer than they did in 2012, when the event brought in more than $900.

Park Players to Present ‘Oliver!’ at Fort Lee’s Good Shepherd

The Park Players, a community theater group dating back more than 30 years, is presenting “Oliver!” for six performances, which started Friday at Fort Lee’s Church of the Good Shepherd.
