Red Bull Arrest, Jaywalker Crackdown, Kids' Teacher Plea Top This Week's News

Fort Lee police Saturday arrested Wilman Conde, a player for the New York Red Bulls, charging him with aggravated assault on a police officer at an apartment where officers were responding to a noise complaint.

Police are writing jaywalking tickets in an effort to curtail incidents of pedestrians getting hit by cars. Fort Lee Police Chief Thomas O. Ripoli held a press conference Thursday morning to urge drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant and follow traffic laws or face fines.

On the same day the Chief of Police announced a crackdown on jaywalkers, Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich said the is also cracking down on drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians legally crossing the borough’s streets.

The auditorium was packed to near capacity Monday evening, as parents, students, faculty and community members attended the ’s regular business meeting to express their support for two teachers whose contracts recently were not renewed.

A representative from search firm Leadership Advantage delivered applications from 11 candidates for Superintendent of Fort Lee Schools to the Fort Lee Board of Education Monday, emphasizing confidentiality. The school board will meet this week to review the applications in private session.

Bids for infrastructure repairs and upgrades to Fort Lee schools approved by voters earlier this year are coming in under budget, according to the school district’s business administrator, to the tune of about $1.7 million thus far.
