UPDATE: Hudson River Advisory Lifted; Ironman Swim On

Officials from Ironman released a statement Friday afternoon announcing that the 2.4 mile Hudson River swim is on. 

"After a sewer line break in Tarrytown, New York, our team worked diligently with local environmental and health departments to monitor and thoroughly test the water," the release said.  

"The New York City Department of Environmental Protection tested the water following the break and the reports show the water is safe for swimming.  Additionally, Westchester County Department of Health has announced its water-quality advisory for the Hudson River will be lifted as of 11 p.m. today.

The Ironman competition consists of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and 26.2 mile run. Approximately 2,500 athletes from around the world are scheduled to participate in the first Ironman race in New York and New Jersey on Saturday.  

This announcement comes on the heels of the Westchester County Department of Health's release that it is lifting the Friday at 11 pm from Croton Point Park and points south in Westchester. Officials have reported that repairs to the broken sewer line in Tarrytown have been completed and sewage discharges into the Hudson River have ceased.

The repair required the bypass of chlorinated sewage that was released into the Hudson River at Sleepy Hollow Wednesday. There was also a discharge of chlorinated sewage into the Hudson River at Yonkers as a result of the line break. It is estimated that approximately 3.4 million gallons of chlorinated sewage was discharged into the Hudson River as a result.

As a precautionary measure, the Westchester Health Department had issued an advisory for recreational use Wednesday evening due to the sewage discharge. Officials said that the advisory is being lifted tonight because the elapsed time since the discharge stopped would have allowed it to dissipate.
