Englewood Cliffs Water Main Break, More State Aid For FL Schools Top Local News

A 30-inch water main burst on Route 9W in Englewood Cliffs Wednesday afternoon, leaving a large portion of Fort Lee residents with little or no water pressure, police said, as United Water urged residents of Fort Lee and neighboring towns to use water for "essential purposes only." (Full Story)

By Thursday morning, emergency crews, who worked throughout the night, had completed repairs. Fort Lee's water pressure was back to normal that morning, while United Water officials announced that pressure to all towns effected had been restored by the afternoon. (Full Story)

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Tuesday the Fort Lee School District will receive an additional $565,959 on top of the $951,643 he said it would receive in February, giving the district $1,131,919 more state said than it had in 2010-11.

Fort Lee will get $1,517,602 from the state overall for 2011-12 compared to the $385,683 it had last year.

Christie said the money is part of an extra $850 million being pumped into New Jersey's public schools into the state's Fiscal Year 2012 Budget. (Full Story)

On Monday, drivers who use Route 5 to get from Edgewater to Fort Lee during peak, weekday hours were forced to start taking the long way around, as the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) began work on a $3.8 million project to remove and stabilize loose rock along the three-tenths of a mile stretch of road.

The road closures affect westbound traffic only in the early stages, but NJDOT also has a 28-day “complete closure” planned. (Full Story)

The Fort Lee Police Department has begun issuing e-tickets, having now installed e-ticket readers, software and printers in four of the six police cars it is using in a demonstration project borough and police officials hope will make issuing tickets for traffic violations safer for police officers, faster for both officers and motorists and more efficient for the courts to process and violators to pay.

Fort Lee Councilman Jan Goldberg, who pushed for a resolution passed in May that cleared the way for the e-ticketing system, told Patch that the police department has successfully passed the state’s data submission test, that all necessary officer training has been completed and that the program is now live. On Sunday morning Fort Lee Fire Department and other borough officials will travel to a firehouse in Woodcliff Lake in northern Bergen County for a ceremony commemorating the beginning of a shared services agreement between the two boroughs for an air bottle-refilling trailer called a mobile cascade system, said Fort Lee Fire Chief Jeff Silver this week. The salon was recently named the fifth best salon (third runner up) in the country in a “Modern Salon” contest by Salon Today Magazine, an industry magazine that focuses on all aspects of salons across the nation. Most people would be wiped out after traveling halfway around the world, but that wasn't the case last Saturday afternoon for Samantha Um of Fort Lee.

The eighth grader arrived in Fort Lee the day before after a 21-hour flight from the Philippine capital of Manila. Less than 24 hours later, she was on the court competing in the first round of the BJKNTC Junior Tennis Classic Championships in Flushing, N.Y. But jet lag wasn't a factor for Um, as she raced through her first round match in the Girls 14-and-under division with a 6-0, 6-0 blitzing of Karina Calderon of Georgetown, Texas. (Full Story)

Fort Lee's annual Movies and Music Under the Stars continued last Saturday evening at the . The music was provided by Disco and R&B band, Smooth, and the movie was the critically acclaimed, The Social Network (2010).
