Commuting News: Extra Bus Trips Friday

Early getaway service for Memorial Day weekend

Here are the transit and traffic alerts you'll need to get through your commute this week.

Rail Alerts

  • All trains will arrive at the inbound track of the Mahwah NJ Transit stationWednesday and Thursday from 10:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. and Friday from 10:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Inbound trains will arrive on the center track of the Ridgewood NJ Transit stationMonday and Tuesday from 9:15 a.m. to 3 p.m.

NJ Transit will offer early getaway service from the Port Authority on the following local routes on Friday for Memorial Day weekend:

  • 158 Edgewater-Fort Lee
  • 159 Fort Lee-Linwood Park via Bergenline
  • 159R Fort Lee-Arcola
  • 163 Arcola-Garden State Plaza-Ikea
  • 163 Arcola
  • 163T Ridgewood Terminal
  • 165P Westwood-Parkway Express
  • 165T Oradell-Turnpike Express
  • 168T Paramus-Turnpike Express
  • 193 Willowbrook Park and Ride
  • 324 Wayne Transit Center-Mother's Park and Ride

NJ Transit is also adding regular early getaway service for several local routes. The extra trips will operate Fridays from May 27 to June 24. The extra trips will be included in new schedules to be issued June 25. Check the NJ Transit website for details.

Bus Routes 163 (Ridgewood-New York) and 164 (Midland Park-Fair Lawn-New York) will be detoured from 10 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday and from 10 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday due to the Summit Avenue Bridge closure in Hackensack. Buses will be detoured at Summit Avenue and Essex Street in Hackensack via Essex Street, Polifly Road and Williams Avenue to the Boulevard in Hasbrouck Heights. New York-bound bus stops along Summit Avenue between Essex Street in Hackensack and Williams Avenue in Hasbrouck Heights won't served. Commuters can use stops along Essex Street, Polifly Road and Williams Avenue.

Starting Monday, all trips to Wayne departing from the Port Authority Bus Terminal between 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. will take the New Jersey Turnpike North and I-80 West. The change is being made to avoid congestion due to ongoing construction at the Passaic River Bridge. The following routes will be affected:

  • 193: Express between New York and the Willowbrook Park & Ride
  • 194: Route 23 Express services between New York and Wayne
  • 198: Wayne-William Paterson University-New York – all service between New York and Wayne
  • 324: Wayne Route 23 Transit Center–New York Express – all service

Traffic Alerts

  • The lower level of the George Washington Bridge will be closed Monday to Thursday from 11 p.m. each night to 5 a.m. the following morning for repairs to the main span of the upper level deck.
  • All lanes of the New York-bound Lincoln Tunnel helix will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. the following morning for catch basin cleaning. The same work will close the New Jersey-bound helix from midnight to 5 a.m. Thursday morning. Commuters can follow detours to and from the tunnel. The New Jersey-bound north tube of the Lincoln Tunnel will be closed Monday from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning for maintenance. Commuters can access the tunnel via entrances at 36th Street and 9th Avenue or 30th, 31st or 33rd streets between 9th and 10th avenues. One tube of the tunnel will be closed Tuesday to Thursday from 11 p.m. each night to 5 a.m. the following morning for maintenance. Two additional lanes in each direction will be closed at 12:30 a.m., leaving one lane in each direction available.
  • One lane in each direction of the Holland Tunnel will be closed Monday to Thursday from 11 p.m. each night to 5:30 a.m. the following morning for maintenance.
