Week: BOE To Lease Office Space, District 37 Candidates Reach Out To Korean-American Voters

"The Week in Review," a weekly roundup of some of the top local stories on Fort Lee Patch, also includes a milestone anniversary for the George Washington Bridge

The Fort Lee Board of Education Thursday approved a five-year lease agreement for central office space at 2175 Lemoine Ave. at a special public work session.

The lease agreement with Morgan New Jersey Holdings LLC will allow the school district to relocate its administrative offices and clear the way for converting its current office space on Whiteman St. into four new classrooms. (Full Story)

The Korean American Voters Council (KAVC) hosted a debate Tuesday for District 37 candidates at the following a forum the previous day with candidates for Bergen County office, in an effort to boost participation in the rapidly-growing Korean community.  

The focus of both was on issues of particular concern to Korean-American voters, who tend to have a low turnout rate for elections, said moderator and KAVC staff attorney Chejin Park. (Full Story)

The George Washington Bridge, “the world’s busiest crossing and one of its most recognizable,” according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, celebrated its 80th anniversary Tuesday. The bridge was dedicated on Oct. 24, 1931 and opened to traffic on the 25th. (Full Story)

The Fort Lee Education Foundation (FLEF) presented the winner of its Tour de Fort Lee 50/50 raffle with a check for $2,500 at the Judge Moore House in Fort Lee Wednesday evening, and Charles Knoll is giving half of it back for scholarships in his late wife’s name.

Knoll, a 1953 graduate of Fort Lee High School and current resident of Mahwah, demonstrated a little school spirit for his alma mater, along with a lot of generosity, when he decided that he would give half of his winnings back to the FLEF, which will use the money for three scholarships in memory of Alice Knoll, herself a 1956 graduate of Fort Lee High School. Students at marked the culmination of “Red Ribbon Week” Friday—a week dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse—by dressing in red and forming a giant red ribbon on the football field adjacent to the school.

Each day this week was dedicated to a different theme; organizers at the school turned it into a competition as well by awarding points to classes with the highest participation to be applied toward Field Day activities at the end of the school year. (Full Story)

When the Fort Lee Bridgemen Football team was in dire need of someone to take control of their audio visual department and get highlights together, their saving grace came in the form of 13-year-old Fort Lee Middle School student Anthony Medaglia. (Full Story)

Chiropractic Healthcare Associates at Health One in Ridgefield is teaming with Army OneSource, a U.S. Army community outreach program, and the Army Community Covenant to raise awareness about the unique challenges of military life for service members and their families and to address the growing need for accessible health services for war veterans.

Dr. Michael Errichiello, who serves on the board of directors of the Greater Fort Lee Chamber of Commerce and is a member and two-time past president of the Fort Lee Rotary, said he and his partner at Chiropractic Healthcare Associates at Health One, Dr. Vineta S. Zalite, are joining other members of the Association of New Jersey Chiropractors (ANJC) across the state in treating returning veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars for free. (Full Story)

And it was announced last week that the Fort Lee Farmers Market has been extended through Sunday, Nov. 20, to allow Fort Lee residents the opportunity to continue buying fresh produce, cakes, pies and many other goodies locally right up until the weekend before Thanksgiving. (Full Story)
