Fort Lee Residents Stock Up, Shelves Begin To Empty

Area grocery stores run low on water, gas stations see longer-than-usual lines as residents prepare for Hurricane Irene's likely arrival

Long lines greeted shoppers hoping to stock up ahead of the storm at the on Lemoine Ave. in Fort Lee Friday afternoon, with the store running low on such items as batteries and bread, and shelves that normally carry bottled water of all types completely bare.

A customer service representative said the store was completely sold out of water and didn’t know when more would arrive, although she said employees were expecting a truck, and a Poland Springs truck was indeed observed pulling away from the store at about 2 p.m.

One shopper told Patch she was at the A&P at 9 a.m. Friday, and the store was already out of water then.

Others filled shopping carts with fruit juice, Vitamin Water, meat, cold cuts and non-perishable items before joining the long lines at the cash registers at the front of the store.

A call to on Anderson Ave. revealed that that grocery store was also running low on water, although they did have “several” 6- and 24-packs of 1.5-liter and smaller bottles still in stock.

Relatively long but manageable lines were also observed Friday morning and afternoon at area gas stations, including at Lemoine Ave. and Bridge Plaza North and at the entrance to Route 46 off Main Street.
