Ground Broken For New Mausoleum at Madonna Cemetery

The new Mausoleum is expected to be completed in two years

in Fort Lee is over 150 years old. The church was finished in 1854 and is the oldest Catholic Church in Bergen County.

Since the early days of Madonna Church, Bergen County's population has grown dramatically. The current mausoleum was constructed in three phases between 1973 and 1979. Currently, it is 97 percent sold, necessitating the construction of a new addition. The new Mausoleum is expected to be completed in two years and wil provide for over 3,100 entombments.

After six years of legal challenges from neighboring homes, groundbreaking for the new Madonna Mausoleum took place Saturday at 11 a.m. Presiding over the groundbreaking for the new mausoleum were Most Rev. John Flesey, Regional Bishop of Bergen County; Rev. Stephen A. Carey, Pastor of Madonna Church, Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich; Andrew Schaffer, Director of Cemeteries – Archdiocese of Newark Lopez; Madonna Cemetery Superintendent Vincenzo Farnise; Madonna Cemetery Foreman Michael Brolato; Madonna Cemetery Salesman Robert De Beltrand; President of McClesky Mausoleum Construction Company Bond Laveck Construction Forman; McClesky Mausoleum Construction Co. and Barbara Pastore, a teacher at Fort Lee High School.
