Flood Protection Plan Meeting Set for This Week

Find out more about the city's plan to protect the community from future flood waters.

A community meeting to discuss Hoboken's flood protection plan will be held Thursday at the Multi Service Center at 7 p.m.

“Through this design competition, we have a unique opportunity to protect Hoboken from flooding with the help of federal funding,” Mayor Dawn Zimmer said. “It’s important for our community to understand this project and provide their feedback. Ultimately, support from the community will enhance Hoboken’s chances for winning the competition and receiving federal funding to help protect us from flooding.”

The public meetings are part of President Barack Obama's Rebuild by Design competition, an initiative of the president's Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Hoboken is working with experts to develop a strategy to protect the city from all kinds of flooding, according to a statement released Wednesday.

The Rebuild by Design competition wants to rebuild areas affected by Hurricane Sandy to be more resilient, sustainable and livable, the statement read.

The competition also sets aside HUD Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery funding to encourage implementing winning projects and proposals. More information on the competition is available here.

OMA's proposal “Resist, Delay, Store, Discharge: a Comprehensive Strategy for Hoboken” has advanced to the third round and is one of 12 finalists.

The plan addresses the city's flooding challenge and the increasing threats from rising waters and stronger storms. Learn more about the project here.

Finalists will be selected in March.
