The Effect of the Minimum Wage on the Economy, a League of Women Voters of Northern Valley forum, will be presented on Wednesday, October 9 at 7:00 p.m., at the Closter Public Library Community Room, 280 High St., Closter, New Jersey. The forum will provide voters with information to make an informed decision about the New Jersey Minimum Wage Increase Amendment, Public Question 2 (SCR1) that will appear on the November 5, 2013 ballot. The event is free and open to the public.
The presenters will be Gordon MacInnes and Michael Saltsman. Lucy Heller from the League of Women Voters of Northern Valley will serve as moderator.
MacInnes is President of New Jersey Policy Perspective (NJPP), a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that has done extensive research on the issue of Minimum Wage and how this affects the economy. A fellow at The Century Foundation in New York, he was previously a lecturer at the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University. MacInnes served as deputy director of the White House Task Force on the Cities during President Lyndon Johnson’s administration.

Saltsman is research director at the Employment Policies Institute (EPI), a non-profit research organization dedicated to studying public policy issues surrounding employment growth. Previously, Saltsman worked as a field economist at the Bureau of Labor Statistics. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan.

The League was an outgrowth of the 19th amendment passed in 1920 giving women the right to vote. With over 800 local Leagues throughout the country, the organization gained prestige by maintaining its nonpartisanship; sponsoring candidates’ forums for local, state and national elections; holding registration drives; disseminating nonpartisan information on candidates; and holding public meetings to discuss current issues. League membership is open to both men and women of voting age who support its mission.
