On September 11

This evening police officers, fire fighters,  clergy, helping professionals, borough officials and residents will gather at the 12th annual Fort Lee Memorial Service at Constitution Park.   I have listened to stories and memorials throughout the day on the radio, in between news of the NYC maryoral election and the debate over what to do in Syria.  I grieve with the families still receiving body parts, with the officers visiting tombs, with ordinary folks who remember the day from near and far.

I want our prayers and memorials and actions to move us towards healing and hope and greater understanding rather than revenge and hatred.  So many people came together to do so much good for each other on Sept. 11, 2001 and in the aftermath; let's build on the sense of shared compassion, mourning, and commitment to the well being of all people.  Here's a modified prayer from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer--I hope it is of use to some as we all remember.

O God, you made us in your own image.  You weep with us as we remember all who died in the WTC attack, all who were injured, all who still struggle with awful memories and trauma.  ,Look with compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony and know your peace. Amen.
