Democrats were poised to gain control of the Bergen County Freeholder Board for the first time in two years, with Tracy Zur and Steve Tanelli leading their Republican opponents by more than 30,000 votes. The Fort Lee Borough Council will once again remain the same, all Democratic, after both incumbents won reelection Tuesday. In unofficial results and with an unknown number of absentee ballots yet to be counted, incumbent Councilman and current Council president Joseph Cervieri was the top vote getter, with 6,318. His running mate, incumbent Councilman Harvey Sohmer received 6,271 votes, both numbers easily enough to defeat Republican challengers Thomas A. Bennett and Peter B. “Mack” Campbell, who received 3,458 and 3,285 votes respectively. The deadline for electronic voting has been extended after email and fax ballots caused headaches Tuesday throughout the state. The veterans of New Jersey politics are largely pushing party-line policy as voters take to the polls on election day. Menenedez, a native of Union City, has been the heavy early favorite over the state legislator.
