Organizer denies political action committee sought to hide contributions
A political action committee financed largely by contractors doing business in Bergen County paid for an event celebrating the county Democratic party's election night victory last November in Hasbrouck Heights, the Star-Ledger reported Wednesday. The PAC that covered the $10,033.54 event, the New Leadership Council of New Jersey, was created by Daniel Ortega, a former Democratic party official under ex-chairman Joe Ferriero. The former party chair was indicted on mail fraud charges, but his conviction was later overturned. Ortega said the PAC was not seeking to hide contributions, according to the report. New Jersey law allows contributors who donate less than $300 to remain anonymous.
A published report Sunday revealed New Jersey’s current campaign donation system needs to be revised after it was disclosed politicians can receive more money while still keeping the names of their donors secret — as long as the contributions are less than $300. The NJ.com report said most states allow campaigns to keep only those donors who give $100, $50 or less private, but Garden State politicians don’t have to report any information about people who contribute less than $300. The report said because of the state’s secretive laws, candidates were able to hide about $12 million out of the $100 million donated. A majority of voters in Fort Lee went Democratic in the November election, but the amount per contribution during the latest election cycle was much higher for the Republican candidate for president.
A majority of Fort Lee residents who voted on Election Day selected Barack Obama for president, and more of the community's campaign contributions went to the eventual winner. But while the number of Democratic and Republican donors in Fort Lee mirrored voting patterns, the amount they gave did not; the amount per campaign contribution in the borough was much higher for Mitt Romney. In Fort Lee, nearly 71 percent of the $165,060 donated to the two top candidates went Obama’s way, but Romney contributors donated an average of about $572, while Obama donors gave roughly $129 each. The Bergen County Clerk’s office released final election results Wednesday from the Nov. 6 general election, and in Fort Lee’s races for seats on the Board of Education and Borough Council, there were no surprises. The unofficial results on election night, with mail-in and provisional ballots yet to be counted, showed incumbent Councilman and current Council president Joseph Cervieri as the top vote getter with 6,318. Yes, we need to vote for the most qualified person first - but somehow we ended up with a guy whose political experience as a single term freeholder and a politically appointed US Attorney over the minority and the woman last time.
