New Jersey's only female governor spoke at the Bergen County Women's Republican Club's 90th anniversary celebration.
Former Gov. Christie Todd Whitman urged attendees at the Bergen County Women's Republican Club's 90th anniversary celebration Wednesday to vote for minorities, women and Gov. Chris Christie. "We need people with different life experiences, with different ways of thinking, to be at that [decision-making] table," Whitman said during her keynote address at Seasons in Washington Township. Whitman, New Jersey's first and only female governor, said she supported more women and citizens from minority groups running for office and also voiced support for Governor Christie in his run for re-election against Democrat Sen. Barbara Buono. Whitman pointed to Christie’s willingness to work across party lines. "We really can set the pace for the nation…

Organizer denies political action committee sought to hide contributions
A political action committee financed largely by contractors doing business in Bergen County paid for an event celebrating the county Democratic party's election night victory last November in Hasbrouck Heights, the Star-Ledger reported Wednesday. The PAC that covered the $10,033.54 event, the New Leadership Council of New Jersey, was created by Daniel Ortega, a former Democratic party official under ex-chairman Joe Ferriero. The former party chair was indicted on mail fraud charges, but his conviction was later overturned. Ortega said the PAC was not seeking to hide contributions, according to the report. The celebration was not an official Democratic party event, he said. "The purpose of this PAC is to support current and new …

New Jersey law allows contributors who donate less than $300 to remain anonymous.
A published report Sunday revealed New Jersey’s current campaign donation system needs to be revised after it was disclosed politicians can receive more money while still keeping the names of their donors secret — as long as the contributions are less than $300. The NJ.com report said most states allow campaigns to keep only those donors who give $100, $50 or less private, but Garden State politicians don’t have to report any information about people who contribute less than $300. The report said because of the state’s secretive laws, candidates were able to hide about $12 million out of the $100 million donated. The state’s rule allowing campaigns to keep these donors anonymous could undergo a re-evaluation after one of the state’s most …

Gov. Christie: “I intend on living here after I’m governor... and I do not want to live under a Democratic governor.”
Gov. Chris Christie told Bergen County Republicans Thursday that members of his party should work together to elect strong Republican candidates across New Jersey in the coming years. Christie, speaking at Bergen County Republican Organization Headquarters in Hackensack, urged the audience that strong Republican leaders and candidates are needed at all levels of government. “This can’t just be about me,” said Christie. “After we win re-election in November it’ll be just four more years that I can be governor and then I’m term limited. [We need] good candidates that can run for governor, run for the legislature, run for freeholder, run for local offices. If we don’t have that set up then we haven’t done as good of a job as we could.” The …

Newark Mayor Cory Booker ended months of speculation Thursday when he announced that he was considering a run for US Senate. “[I] will complete my full second term as mayor. As for my political future, I will explore the possibility of running for The United States Senate in 2014,” Booker said in a statement released shortly before noon. Political observers in the state and beyond have speculated whether Booker, 43, a Rhodes scholar and Bergen County native, would run for governor against Chris Christie in 2013 or seek the Senate seat now held by Booker’s fellow Democrat Frank Lautenberg. Lautenberg, at 88 the Senate’s oldest member, has not announced any plans to step down when his term expires in 2014. In his statement, Booker’s …

A majority of voters in Fort Lee went Democratic in the November election, but the amount per contribution during the latest election cycle was much higher for the Republican candidate for president.
A majority of Fort Lee residents who voted on Election Day selected Barack Obama for president, and more of the community's campaign contributions went to the eventual winner. But while the number of Democratic and Republican donors in Fort Lee mirrored voting patterns, the amount they gave did not; the amount per campaign contribution in the borough was much higher for Mitt Romney. In Fort Lee, nearly 71 percent of the $165,060 donated to the two top candidates went Obama’s way, but Romney contributors donated an average of about $572, while Obama donors gave roughly $129 each. The County released final results Wednesday, including provisional and mail-in ballots.
The Bergen County Clerk’s office released final election results Wednesday from the Nov. 6 general election, and in Fort Lee’s races for seats on the Board of Education and Borough Council, there were no surprises. The unofficial results on election night, with mail-in and provisional ballots yet to be counted, showed incumbent Councilman and current Council president Joseph Cervieri as the top vote getter with 6,318. His running mate, incumbent Councilman Harvey Sohmer, received 6,271 votes. Both of those numbers were easily enough to call the race in their favor, with Republican challengers Thomas A. Bennett and Peter B. “Mack” Campbell receiving 3,458 and 3,285 votes respectively. The unofficial results in the race for three seats on …

'I'm a guy who tells the truth all the time and if the President of the United States did a good job, I’m going to say he did a good job.'
A day after President Barack Obama earned reelection, Governor Chris Christie dismissed critics who have accused him of bolstering the president during Obama's post-Sandy visit to New Jersey. “I wouldn't call what I did an embrace of Barack Obama," Christie said. "I'm a guy who tells the truth all the time and if the President of the United States did a good job, I’m going to say he did a good job." Speaking to reporters as Winter Storm Athena prepared to batter the already storm-shocked state, Christie was also quick to dismiss speculation of a 2016 presidential run, saying that the life and death issues inherent with back-to-back storms have made politics a minor focus for now. “I've got a job to do in New Jersey. My future, whatever it …

It's not nonsense if there is an open push against voting for women and minorities. Yes, we need to vote for the most qualified person first - but somehow we ended up with a guy whose political experience as a single term freeholder and a politically appointed US Attorney over the minority and the woman last time. Hopefully not this time.   more ›
