Union County Olympian Expelled From London Games

The Westfield judo athlete tested positive for marijuana.

Nicholas Delpopolo, a Westfield native who placed seventh in his division at the London Olympics, has been expelled from the Olympic games after allegedly testing positive for marijuana.

As a result, the International Olympic Committee has disqualifed Delpopolo's result from the men's 73 kg Judo event.

According to information on the official International Olympics website, Delpopolo's diploma in the event has been withdrawn and his Olympic identity and accreditation card has been cancelled and withdrawn.

Delpopolo, 23, is ranked number one in the U.S. and 12th in the world in the sport. He secured his spot on the U.S. Olympic Judo team on May 12 after a dramatic fight to the finish against long-time rival Mike Eldred at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa in Miami. He was among six Americans competing on the U.S. Judo team and was the only one in his 73 kg weight class.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Delpopolo has issued an apology: "My positive test was caused by my inadvertent consumption of food that I did not realize had been baked with marijuana, before I left for the Olympic Games. I apologize to the U.S. Olympic Committee, to my teammates, and to my fans, and I am embarrassed by this mistake."

Delpopolo continued, "I look forward to representing my country in the future and will re-dedicate myself to being the best judo athlete that I can be."

Exactly - Here we go again with the POT issue - Phelps smoked bongs and is a top swimmer and this guy is a top judo participant - Give me a break, legalize it and tax it already - The best is when the corrupt law system imprisons a person for pot - Toke up America!

Pot is a mind altering drug. Why make another chemical legal. Hasn't enough damage be done already by nicotine, alcohol, benzodiapines, pain killers and that doesn't even take into account the illegal street drugs. Stop with that argument that pot is harmless. It's a chemical that alters brain chemistry. Why won't anyone live their life without taking a mood altering chemical?

hey ricky if pot is so bad for you and so "mind altering" how did this young man become good enough to become #1 ranked in the United States. Do you have any idea how much hard work and effort it takes to become the #1 ranked person in any sport.
nicotine, alcohol, and painkillers are all a lot more addicting and 10 times worse for you. if anything this is just proof that pot really isnt that bad for you.
ricky have you ever had an alcoholic beverage or pain killer- if so you are just as guilty as this young man for taking "mood altering chemicals".
isnt it funny that we have professional athletes who have been convicted of spousal abuse, drinking and driving, etc and they are still participating in thier sports but we are going to villian-ize a young man whos "crime" put no one else in danger

Steroids helped a ballplayer have the record for the most home runs ever. Just because you get a boost from chemicals doesn't mean they're great for your health in the long run. Drugs and other ingested chemicals cause damage in the long run. As for caffeine and other chemicals, yes they're part of our culture but why bring in yet another chemical and endorse it as legal? We've had enough damage done from alcohol and other mood enhancing chemicals now used among society. That was the point made.

come on ricky that just silly comparing it to steriods. steriods is proven to be performance enhancing, recovers from injuries quickly and builds muscle quickly. that is clearly giving someone an unfair advantage in athletics.
my only comment is if alcohol, caffeine, fast food, pain killers, etc are legal than pot should be too.

Agreed, ideally people should live without mood altering substances, but reality is that we all use them, I'm sure you included, whether its alcohol or caffeine, or even harder... these are all just centuries-old mechanisms to alleviate oneself. But you said it yourself.... why allow the harmful ones (i.e. opiate painkillers, benzos, alcohol), yet criminalize the least harmful one of them all (pot)? It just makes no logical sense the way the legal system rationalizes its policies on marijuana. And no one is saying "pot is harmless", it has negative effects, but nothing on the scale of alcoholism or addiction to hard drugs. There is no scientific proof of any long-term negative health effects either... altering brain chemistry? Where did you get that? You don't get wet brain from smoking too much pot... studies show that most effects of THC on the brain are short-term, and are even reversible after cessation. I respect your opinion, but your logic is another matter.....

Food baked with marijuanna, (inadvertent consumprion of ) I had a hard time swallowing that one. But it has been a long time since I have eaten prime rib de doobie or chicken in hemp sauce. Exactly how many dishes are we talking about that are prepped with marujuanna. Well there is Julia Child's mouth watering Chicken Pot Pie and doesn't the Iron Chef do Hard Core Pot Roast. We are all born at night, just not last night.

"the International Olympic Committee has disqualifed Delpopolo's result from the men's 73 kg Judo event." This does not even have anything to do with America's law against drugs. Marijuanna is internationally recognized as an illegal drug.

Stacie, incorrect: In holland cannabis is formally illegal, but Justice-guidelines show that no action is to be taken in case of possession of a small amount and sale under strict conditions. There are many countries, and of course certain states, that treat it similarly. The Olympic Committee is free to make its own rules which all participants should be well aware of. No matter what your stance is on the issue, Delpopolo should have been aware of the rules and therefore took a calculated risk.

how does a burnout become #1 ranked in the United States? how did michael phelps become the best swimmer ever (and most celebrated olympian) after smoking pot? Johny law are you ranked #1 nationally in your profession? the simple answer is pot really isnt that bad for you

a lot of lazy people have nothing better to do than smoke pot all day- pot didnt make these individuals lazy they were lazy before they started smoking. its just like alcohol- some people cant control themselves and become alcoholics, does this mean everyone who drinks is an alcoholic? just like alcohol, pot is not a problem if you do not abuse it.
its funny how a generation who fed their children with anti depressants, adderall, and other medications that REALLY alter your mind would complain about pot.
i wish you people realized how many doctors, engineers, and other very hardworking americans who contribute a lot and are considered successful actually smoke pot responsibly on their own time

How would you feel if you had to compete against someone who is under the influence of alcohol? Is there a risk / potential liability to allow someone to compete who may be under the influence (what if they get hurt in a competition, due to their impairment)?

Being invited to the Olympics comes with certain rules - you don't have to agree with them - but if you want to be part of it, you have to follow them. If you are too addicted to stop long enough to test clean, then maybe you do have problems you need to resolve first?

He wasn't aware that he consumed food baked with marijuana? I'm pretty sure that detecting a pot brownie (which is what I assume he's referring to) is pretty easy after a few bites, unless it has next to nothing in it. Let's be serious. He ate it and didn't realize it'd show up on his drug test and it should bar him from competing if he didn't comply with the rules that athletes have to follow. However, from a personal standpoint, no one should think THAT differently of the kid--it's a pot brownie it's not the end of the world. He's obviously not a low-life, he's worked to get to where he is, he must be doing something right. Give him a break, we all make mistakes. Should he be able to compete? No. But does it deserve to be treated like a giant scandal? No again.

The brownie tastes a little weird.. I ate a few bites of my friend's older brother's batch once after mistaking it for a normal one and realized something was a bit off.. not to mention I was confused why he had suddenly become Mr. Betty Crocker and made us brownies...

I have a better idea, Al, how about you identify the victim in the alleged crime. This athlete is not the first to have smoked pot, no one thinks of it as a performance enhancing drug.

What kind of society do we live in when we cage people for committing "crimes" where no one is a victim? How is it there are 4x as many people living in China, and we have more people in jail then they do?

The World Anti-Doping Agency, who monitors the World Anti Doping Code, lists marijuana as prohibited in competition. Their website is www.wada-ama.org. This is a code that all national teams are made aware of, because they compete in an international arena. The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) monitors national level competitions in this country.

I agree with avvocati. I won't post my position on pot here out of fear of having my head ripped off but, each and every athlete signs a code of conduct. He broke the rules. Why they didn't test prior to getting to London is a great question. His skills and accomplishments aren't diminished because of the Olympic committee...they're tarnished because of his poor judgement. I could care less if he smokes pot on a daily basis but when one earns a position on an Olympic team, follow the rules. If I failed a drug test, I'd lose my job...no question about that!
