The Week in Sports: a Look Back and a Look Ahead

The recent snowstorm shuffled the schedule for most Fort Lee teams.

From basketball to wrestling, and indoor track to bowling, here is the latest news in Fort Lee sports:

  • The Fort Lee boys' basketball team was delayed twice this week for two completely different reasons. The Bridgemen were prevented from hosting Mahwah on Tuesday due to a broken water pipe at the high school, and then Fort Lee was snowed out from playing Westwood on Thursday. The Bridgemen did make up the Westwood game on Friday in a 63-44 road loss to the Cardinals. Sophomore guard Nick Gentile scored 14 points in the defeat. Fort Lee has now lost four straight games as they enter another difficult week. The Bridgemen will host Mahwah Monday at 4:30 p.m. then Dwight Morrow on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Fort Lee also visits Ridgefield Park on Thursday night at seven before hosting Ramsey on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
  • The Fort Lee girls' basketball team finished the week even with one win and one loss. The Lady Bridgemen fell to Mahwah on the road 47-34 on Tuesday, were snowed out from playing Westwood on Thursday, and successfully defeated the visiting Lodi Lady Rams on Saturday 46-35. Senior forward Bindi Parikh scored 18 points in the team’s game against Mahwah and also recorded a 15 rebound performance in Saturday’s victory. With the win, Fort Lee ended a four game losing streak. But now, coach Stacie Zafiris and the girls must play four games within a span of five days. They play at Westwood on Monday at 4:30, visit Dwight Morrow on Tuesday at 5:30, then return to host Ridgefield Park on Thursday and Dwight Englewood on Friday at 7 p.m.
  • Last Saturday, the Fort Lee bowling team competed in the Bergen County Tournament. Senior David Daniels averaged a 192 and junior Kei Kase broke 200 in two separate games. On Monday, both teams lost to Dumont as senior Yeliz Inalman led the girls with a 176 high and a 175 as well. On Friday, the boys beat Cliffside Park, but the girls fell short. Freshman Ammad Quraishi bowled a high game of 157. Next week marks the end of the bowling season for Fort Lee. They play River Dell on Tuesday and Tenafly on Thursday in the final matches for the team. Both will be held at Bowler City beginning at 4 p.m.
  • The co-ed indoor track team was also affected by the weather when snow postponed their attendance at the Bergen County Relays on Wednesday. Competing in the Bergen County Relay Championship held at the New York City Armory Friday night, the teams boys and girls teams placed sixth in the 4 x 1600 meter relay and 4 x 800 meter relay respectively.  There were 37 teams entered in Friday's meet. Fort Lee now has the all-important Big North Division 7 Championship on Monday night. The event will be held in New York City at the 168th Street Armory. Senior runner Nancie Sophias will be in contention for the 600 meter run as well as running with her fellow teammates on the 4 x 400 relay team. If all goes well, Fort Lee has the potential to come away with a few medals at the division championship.
  • And finally, the wrestling team was scheduled to face Leonia on Wednesday night, but the snowstorm also postponed that matchup. Unfortunately, it was the only match scheduled for the week. Because of that, the Bridgemen will go two full weeks without a live match when they host Tenafly Wednesday 7 p.m. Fort Lee also has a quad-meet scheduled for Saturday morning against Becton, Clifton and host Ridgefield Park. The first match will start at 11 a.m.
