The Week in Sports: A Look Back and a Look Ahead
Basketball holiday tournaments highlight the next few days for Fort Lee.
During the past week, the Fort Lee wrestling and indoor track teams started their seasons, the co-ed bowling team had their last match before the break and both basketball teams have finished their first slate of games.
Last Tuesday, the boy's bowling team defeated Westwood 5-0 with strong performances from senior David Daniels and junior Peter King. Both players shot in the 190s as the Bridgemen earned the sweep. On the girl's side, the Lady Bridgemen were defeated by Westwood 5-0. Senior Yeliz Inalman had a team high game of 175.
On the mats, the Fort Lee wrestling team lost the season opening match on the road to Mahwah 58-15. Junior Andrew Lee recorded a pin for the Bridgemen in the 135 weight class and later on in the evening, senior Anatoliy Alkazov recorded a late come-from-behind win at 152.
The indoor track team performed very well at the Spiked Shoe Holiday Classic this week. Against almost sixty other teams, many athletes stood out including, Coach Ed Garrison's athletes of the meet. Competing in three events in his first ever meet, sophomore Masaru Yamaguchi finished seventh in the 55 meter dash. Also in her first meet, freshman Ashley Jenq finished seventh in the same race with a time of 7.7 seconds, just short of landing a medal.
And finally, both basketball teams struggled and failed to record their first wins of the season. The girl's basketball team fell to Cliffside Park on Tuesday 35-30, and then lost again to Bergenfield on Thursday 65-30. The boy's team has lost their first three games of the season against both Bergenfield and Cliffside Park on the road, as well as Ramapo at home on Thursday. Sophomore guard Nick Gentile was named the Patch Player of the Week and is averaging almost 12 points per game so far in the early going.
In the upcoming week, the Fort Lee boys' basketball team will host the Jack Reilly Basketball Tournament, while the girls' basketball team will try to repeat as the Lyndhurst Holiday Tournament Champions .
The Lady Bridgemen have a bye for the first set of games before meeting up with the winner of Lyndhurst and Palisades Park at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
If Fort Lee is able to win that contest, they will play in the championship game on Thursday night at 7:30 with a chance of winning back to back holiday tournaments. With a loss on Tuesday, the Lady Bridgemen would enter the consolation game, also on Thursday night, beginning at 6:00.
All of the tournament's games will be held at Lyndhurst high school beginning on Monday night.
The Fort Lee boys' basketball team, on the other hand, will start their holiday tournament on Sunday and the Bridgemen also have the luxury of playing at home.
But the Jack Reilly Tournament is stacked with many talented teams like St. Mary's, Snyder, Mahwah and Northern Valley Old Tappan.
The holiday tournament starts on Sunday with the action beginning at noon. The Bridgemen are scheduled to play in the fourth and final game of the day against Orange at 5:15 p.m.
The Jack Reilly Tournament continues on Tuesday with a winner's and loser's bracket, also at Fort Lee High School. The tournament will conclude on Thursday with a championship game and a consolation game. All teams will play three games unless they lose the first two.
In other winter sports action, the Bergen County Wrestling Tournament takes place on Wednesday and Thursday this week. The indoor track team competes in the Holiday Relays on Dec. 28 at the Jersey City Armory, and the bowling team takes the week off.
Stay tuned for updates on this week's sporting events including any games that may be affected by the upcoming snowstorm.
