Softall Season Recap: Lady Bridgemen Tie School Record for Wins

The Lady Bridgemen had an exciting season and are looking forward to a bright future.

The Lady Bridgemen softball team finished the season with a record of 15-7-1. The record signifies not only a great season but also a monumental one, in which the team tied last year’s squad for the all time record for wins in a season.

Many players on the team earned honors, including Amanda Moldanado, who was named a first team all league pitcher; Caitlin Mckenna, who was named as a first team all league outfielder; Megan Gimson, who made first team all league catcher, Jillian Scrivanich, named  second team all league infielder; Anthe Nikolaidis, named second team all league first baseman; Brianna Mattesich, who was named to the first team all league as an infielder and Morgan Romba, who also made first team all league as an outfielder. Nikki Farber and Renee Mattesich made all league honorable mention.

Fort Lee softball played many memorable games, including comeback wins against Mahwah--a turning point in the team’s season--Cliffside Park and Hackettstown, which was the first round of the state tournament, before falling at Rutherford to end the season. The Lady Bridgemen showed much resolve all season, and there was never a game in which they gave up no matter what the circumstances were.

Assistant coach Stacie Zafiris was pleased with the overall results.

“In terms of our overall season, we were extremely pleased with how well the season went," Zafiris said.  "We had many positions to fill with the loss of some key players to last year’s graduation.  The team came together and worked hard and never gave up no matter who their opponent was.”

The team will be losing four seniors this year: CeCe Iduyonmi, Lindsay Clesmere, Morgan Romba and Brianna Mattesich. Romba and Mattesich were both captains on the team.

The loss of the seniors could take some time to fully recover from, but there is plenty of talent that will be returning next season.

“We will look to fill the voids of all leaguers and captains Brianna Mattessich and Morgan Romba but return 7 of 9 starters including our pitcher, who is only a freshman," Zafiris said.

And with the return of seven of nine starters, next season should prove to be another season of exciting Lady Bridgemen softball.
